Loving LEK

I'm sure we've all heard the old adage "write what you know", right? It's a little bit stupid because how can a Sci Fi writer actually know what it's like to start a colony on Mars? Nobody's done it yet, despite Elon Musk's best attempts. We now have a Tesla orbiting our planet though, but I digress.

Write what you know means write from your experience and point of view. So that's what I have decided to do here with my new blog series Loving LEK.




I KNOW that I absolutely love working out with this woman, Lauren Kleban for those of you who've been living under a rock and have never heard of her. I'm not judging. Actually I'd be super excited to hear that you didn't know who she was because then I'd get to be the one to tell you all about her and send you rushing straight to her website to sign up for her free seven-day trial. It's like when you've been raving about your favorite television show for like four seasons, telling the entire world and anyone else who will listen that they must watch it, and then one day you get a text or tag from someone thanking you and singing your praises because they finally watched it (Peaky Blinders - watch it, then come back and tell me I was right, it's the best series on the planet).

Don't ask me why the hell I seem to always wind up writing about fitness, I have no answer for you. I'm as close to a sloth as is humanly possible. As my favorite long-standing joke goes, if I was a rapper I'd be known as Lay-Z. I really would rather be plonked in front of the television watching whatever the latest hot new drama is and eating (vegan) cheese doodles. Still somehow I manage to move my body at least five-days a week. A task I'm happy to report has become much easier since August 2017 when a couple of friends made a point of telling me that I must try this new workout they'd been doing with a trainer out of LA.

I'll confess, it's hard for me to find a workout that I like, that's doable for a middle-agey lady like myself - and also -- not only delivers results but could also manage to undo a couple of years of weird oblique bulking that was created by doing another type of workout. You see I've always had a muffin top - hence the name of this blog - Mastering My Midlife (and Midriff). I'm thick around my middle to begin with even when I'm skinny as a stick (which is not now btw) and once I built muscle the wrong way in that area, it was nearly impossible to shrink it even if I never ate again. Until Lauren.

Lemme confess to you, I tried every fucking thing after I left that other program to try and reduce that muscle mass and nothing worked. I even went for a ten-session treatment of Rolfing and my therapist could not get that band of muscle to budge. I felt like it was just going to be something I had to live with.

In any case, I started LEK with zero expectation. I was just really digging the smooth jazzy vibe of her sculpt class. 

Now listen, when I say smooth and jazzy, I say it the same way I'd refer to a top shelf bourbon (yeah baby, I just compared you to good booze). She doesn't actually play jazz in the class, that would be weird. What I mean is that she's a super chill, fully in control teacher with mad skills in the arena of shaping bodies. The side effect of my love of her classes was two fold, one I kept doing them and two I started to notice the shrinkage around my middle. I'm not all the way there yet, but I'm confident if she keeps coming out with the kickass classes that she's been delivering since I signed up for her on-demand classes, by my one-year anniversary Ima be in fighting form.

I was having such a good time and seeing such bloody good results that I wanted to share it with other people. At first, it started out with just a friend here or there, someone who'd come to me to say that their workout was too expensive, or their classes were getting to complicated, or they weren't seeing the results they'd once had with the current workout they were doing. Low and behold, after some time, these same people were coming back to me quietly telling me how much they'd been enjoying their LEK fit classes. Their bodies were changing in new and exciting ways, it was so much more affordable they were able to try different online courses, or that they just so appreciated the vocal cues they got from Lauren's classes. Then I was finding that I'd do a class and think - damn girl, that shit was next level, and I'd want to tell somebody.

A few days ago it was as if I was struck by an an insight so powerful I couldn't ignore it. If I loved this workout and wanted to talk about it, maybe there were other people who'd want to do that too and since I am kind of social media averse apart from my IG that someone else set up for me, maybe I could write about it and the series was born. It's like that movie Field of Dreams if you build it, they will come. Who knows, maybe no one will come, but at least I'll get to talk about how much I love LEK.

I'd love to tell you what to expect, but I often color outside the lines. One day I may write about a particular class that I found especially good. I may discover a tip that helped my form in some way or another that I felt compelled to share, or maybe I'll write about my results, I'll likely share my trials because I can be very clumsy. Whatever. It's about connecting, staying motivated and accountable.

  1. SHAN!!! Here I am doing research about my new form of fitness, LEKfit and I find you! This is Nicole in Chicago, an online acquaintance from a few years back. Looks like we've been on a similar fitness path. I was doing the previous workout method, but I kept having back and neck/shoulder pain (at 47, not what I want), so I'm checking out LEKfit. I'm still figuring out Lauren's sculpt classes and figuring out how to modify where I need to. Anyway, I'm super glad you're out there, cutting a path with a machete to middle age fitness (as it were). Keep it up!

    1. Hey Beauty! How's everything in the windy city? So nice to find you here. We always were kind of on the same journey somehow so I should not be surprised to see you here. I love LEK. It's a radical shift toward more precision, balance and joy and it's exactly what I was looking for. I'll be curious to hear how you get on with the classes and what new discoveries you make in your body. Keep me posted!

  2. Hey cuzzin, I love your writing. You are hilarious! In my own fitness journey I would say she-who-shall-not-be-named reduced my legs--DB gave me the best abs and arms--LEK was the most do-able and normal--but the rebounder bulked my legs. Ha ha, shall we create our own fitness method? We know too much! I laughed so hard when you mentioned streaming, I think you were referring to streaming--where if you did it you couldn't do anything else all day. It's so true! It's so hard that even she-who-shall-not-be-named looks like she hates the own workout she created. There needs to be joy in working out. Results in the body and nourishment for the soul. Keep up the funny writing!

    1. If only we had the time, we could create a compilation that boosted our booty, trimmed our torsos, toned our arms, and streamlined our legs...
      I still think the best way to go is a combo of the pros - using what works and staying away from the stuff that doesn't.
      Glad I'm not the only one who has this palaver.

  3. Hello Shan - I somehow stumbled upon your blog this morning trying to find the meaning of #gybg. I found it and it lead me to your blog. What I found crazy is that I have been doing what I believe is the same method as you did religiously for a year now. I to have seen results in every part of my body... but, I Thought I was going nuts because my gut seems to be getter bigger!! How is this possible.. I am eating fairly well for the most part .. I sweat my tush off on that mat 6 days a week for over and hour. Everything looks good except my belly! I swear it’s bigger. Is that was you experienced?? I don’t want to give up.. but I don’t want to continue this expensive method if I’m doing something wrong. Please please please tell me everything!!

    1. Hey Kristina,
      That was the case for me, yes. I think it's because there is a lot of oblique work with that method so I found my obliques were bulging and making my middle look bigger. Maybe that's what is happening for you too?

    2. So you found that with LEKFit that didn’t happen? It looks so similar. I’m so interesting in the rebounding. Does that help with belly fat?

    3. No, LEK might look similar at first glance but it's completely different. The rebounder is great because you get cardio without the high impact of floor work, but the rebounder classes also give a bit of floor work as well so you do get a good calorie burn.
      My recommendation would be to go to the site and try the free 7 day trial. She has all her studio classes up, plus shorter classes, intro classes and all sorts. It will give you an idea if you like it at no cost to you. Ha, I sound like a sales person, but honestly I just really enjoy the vibe and she's a fantastic teacher who guides you though class with tips and reminders so you know that you're doing the moves right, you don't have to stare at the screen and guess.

    I hope you are feeling stronger everyday and no longer “The Anemic Vegan”!
    I’m trying NIcole Winhoffer this month and NWChurch/Nw Method. Nothing flat on Nicole and she will answer your emails. Her Classes are both a split of cardio and sculpting. Cardio at the end that she breaks down as you do it. It’s easy to follow and not bouncing on the ball of your foot for half-an-hour.
    You feel like you’re having a dance party with your friend or a dancing in an mtv video.(Google it, young ones)

    No ankle weights. Sometimes she does weighted arms but she loves to use a towel instead and it freaking burns. Her chair workouts are crazy. What keeps me coming back is her energy. She’s happy to be there. She interacts with her students.

    I hope the results come. I’m tired of doing something I dread. I always felt her followers brought out something odd in me. I always felt like a failure or I was doing something wrong and it really fed into old bad behaviors. Eating little or binging. Not their fault, that’s on me but still. There’s a toxicity that maybe I’m imagining?

    Sorry to blab on and on. I still think there should be somewhere safe to talk about this.

      I'm so happy to hear that you have found a workout that has the pace and energy that feeds you and makes you want to come back. I love the idea of an MTV video dance party. I'll have to check her out. I'm nowhere near well enough to be dancing but am able to once again do a full LEK class. It's only been the last week or so that I have been doing that. So it's been a long haul.

      No, you're not imagining the weird toxic energy. As things grew, there became an increasingly unhealthy contingent and groupie-like vibe if you know what I mean. Glad you were able to recognize what's right and good for you and follow your instincts to this new place that feels good!

  5. Thank you, Shan! Somethings are never questioned. Things said that make me sit back and go “Waaaaaaiiiittt..”

    There’s no doubt that method works well for some. So it works. I guess? I never had the amazing results.
    It’s just other methods that I know worked for me, were just so boring after that.

    Anyhoo! You’ll be dancing soon! I know it and I’m praying for ya!
